The martial arts originally were developed to protect oneself and loved ones from those who would harm them, whether they were armed or not. Thousands of years ago, Korea was an occupied country and no weapons were allowed. The families of the common people, or the children that were referred to as the Hwarang group, vowed a promise. The promise involved 100% effort and a code of ethics that included sportsmanship with excellence and courtesy in and out of the training hall or Do Jang, as it is commonly referred to.This overwhelming pride in the heritage and teachings of the originators of the sport and art of Taekwondo and Kum Do carries on to these very days, some 2000 years later.

The principles are still sound and relate to goodwill for all. Gain an ongoing commitment to pass on what you have learned as a student to insure that all can be bettered and gain from Taekwondo and Kum Do lessons. See why Taekwondo and Kum Do are such a huge part of the culture of so many countries, languages and martial artists today.

Our Name

MIREU  미르  (Korean Dragon ‘용/룡 (미르) – Yong/Ryong, In pure Korean, known as ‘Mireu’)

Dragons in Korean mythology are mostly viewed as benevolent beings related to water and agriculture – Ancient texts sometimes mention sentient speaking dragons, capable of understanding such complex emotions such as devotion, kindness, and gratitude.  Living in a Iowa, being an agricultural state, wanting our school to have strong values that welcome everyone, develop unity amongst our students and others, show’s our devotion to teaching the art, radiates kindness and gratitude this name seemed very fitting.
